Origins of RWP – CUSP 2010

Continuing our series of “origin stories” about Reading with Pictures, Josh gave another speech about comics at the CUSP 2010 event. A little more detailed than the first presentation, the information Josh presents provides solid rationale on why comics can be strong educational tools.

Josh Elder, founder of RWP, was speaking about comics in the classroom long before the organization became a non-profit. Below is one of the first speeches Josh gave about the foundations of what would become Reading with Pictures at the December 4, 2009 TEDx PeachTree event, titled: What if we brought comic books into the classroom, and it changed everything?

About TEDx, x=independently organized event

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x=independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.*
