AMP! Comics for Kids to publish Reading With Pictures: The Graphic Textbook

Magazines Deliver Holiday Gift of Literacy to Arctic Children and Families

While Santa’s helpers ready good cheer for the globe, “Team Duffy” – Beth, Dan, and their two children Rachel and Eddie in Ontario, Canada have marshalled a continental response to airlift over 3,000 magazines and comics to Inuit children and families north of the Arctic Circle in Nunavut, Canada for literacy. RWP Board Member coordinates her own local holiday comic book drive!

Even though we have a national drive going on, we have folks interested in creating their own local comic book drives. Reading With Pictures launches comic book holiday drive for #GivingTuesday

Last year after the tragedy of Sandy Hook, Reading With Pictures launched an emergency comic book drive to donate family friendly comic books to the families of that community.  We were able to coordinate over 500 unique donations toward this drive. This year, we will build upon that success while also joining in a national movement called #GivingTuesday.  On December 3, 2013 we will officially begin accepting donations for our holiday comic book drive that will be donated to the children at Comer Children’s Hospital in Chicago, IL. We’re coming to New York Comic Con and couldn’t be happier! And you should be too with all the great stuff we have coming your way. First and foremost we have a booth and you should stop by. Comic creators come together for the RWP benefit auction!

Dozens of comic creators have generously donated over 40 items to the RWP Benefit Auction which starts today and runs throughTuesday, October 8. Andy Diggle (The Losers) has donated signed books; Dean Trippe (Project Rooftop) has donated a complete superhero makeover; Raina Telgemeier (Drama), Chris Giarrusso (Mini-Marvels) and Chris Samnee (Daredevil) have donated original art; Mark Waid (Kingdom Come) has even donated a walk-on role in his webcomic Insufferable! Reading With Pictures, a non-profit organization supporting the use of comics and graphic novels in education, is proud to announce the Reading With Pictures Common Core Graphic Texts List for Elementary Grades. The list represents a large selection of the best available graphic texts for Common Core instruction, as curated by curriculum developer Tracy Edmunds, M.A., librarians Kat Kan and Rosemary Kiladitis, teacher Chris Wilson, and Dr. Katie Monnin. Titles are listed by grade band (K-1, 2-3, and 4-5) and include applicable Common Core ELA Standards for both Literature and Informational Text. As pencils are being sharpened and lunch boxes are being packed, we agree with Reading With Pictures’ contributor David Roman that comic books are the “real” deal as educational materials.
