Comics in the Common Core at SDCC

At San Diego Comic-Con, Reading With Pictures presented “Integrating Comics into the Common Core” to a full house. Moderated by RWP founder, president, and Comics Ambassador Josh Elder, the panel had a wide-ranging discussion on how comics and graphic novels can be used to address Common Core Standards. Our sincere thanks to Gina Gagliano of First Second Books (http://www.firstsecondbooks.com/),Writer Geoffrey Golden (http://www.geoffreygolden.com/) and Editor Paul Morrissey of the math comic “Probamon: Gotta Know the Odds!” from the upcoming Graphic Textbook, and Anastasia Betts of Graphic Novels 101 (http://www.graphicnovels101.com/) for participating.

Tracy Edmunds, Curriculum Resources Manager for RWP, explained how graphic texts address the text complexity requirements in the Common Core and why they are uniquely suited to teach Common Core Reading Standards.  You can download the slides used in the presentation here. A PDF on graphic texts and text complexity, which includes sample lesson activities by Dr. Katie Monnin, is available here.
